The Naked Bluff

In poker, few things are both as exciting and as scary as running a naked bluff. While bluffing with absolutely nothing can be fun and exciting, they can also be both scary and costly if they are ill timed, are performed against the wrong type of player or if the bluff is run poorly. A player needs to ensure that their bluff is done at the right time in the proper manner and against the right type of poker player.

There is a saying in poker that claims you can never bluff a call station. While there are very few generalizations that can be made in poker, this one is very close to holding true. A player attempting to bluff might want to think better of doing so when up against a calling station, as they will call far too often with fourth pair or another weak hand. Along similar lines, a player should avoid bluffing against a player who is unable to understand they should clearly fold. When one bluffs, they are trying to tell their opposition in a forceful manner that they should go away. If a player is unable to understand they should fold, they are unlikely to do so.

Additionally, a bluff should make sense in the context of the Absolute Poker hand. If you are betting through a hand and the opposing player puts you on a flush draw, then betting the river when the board flushes makes complete sense. The opposition will likely fold with the belief that they are beat because you made your hand. However, if they put you on a flush draw and the river pairs the board without making a flush, betting out on a bluff will likely result in an unwelcome call, especially if you were playing your hand similar to how you would play a flush draw. Be certain that the bluff makes sense in the context of the hand.

Similarly, a bluff rarely works by itself at SpadeClub. A player should tell a story over multiple streets when running a bluff. Each street should introduce the next chapter and each chapter should become more believable. It is difficult to represent a made flush if you have not played the hand in a manner similar to how you would play a flush draw on earlier streets. When bluffing in poker, all the facts must lead to the conclusion that the opposition is beat and that calling will only result in a loss of money for them. By bluffing consistently and convincingly at the right times, a player can turn the naked bluff on the river into a winning situation.
